Siobhan McKelvey

Director General of Eurobitume

During 2022, Eurobitume’s mission was strongly supported by the injection of new initiatives and the continuation of existing, established activities.

Promoting the safe and efficient use of bitumen

This has always been a core element of our mission and to make this work more effectively, an important research project was completed under the PRC Committee. This task directly engaged with stakeholders to better understand their needs and ultimately improve the way we communicate and promote the use of bitumen to our important target audiences. You will find more about this exciting initiative in the PRC chapter of this 2022 Annual Review.

Education

Education and Sustainability have recently been added to the core values of our mission. We embraced the challenge of education and launched a series of members-only e-learning webinars, providing a valuable tool that non-technical and new to the industry people within our member companies could use to gain a high-level, all-round knowledge about bitumen.

We successfully delivered six of these very popular online sessions and in 2023 we plan to continue and add a series of external stakeholder webinars about bitumen as well.

Sustainability

Last year we saw the focus on Sustainability increase further within Eurobitume - as was common among our industry partners. To encourage learning and best practice, Eurobitume organised a specific seminar for our members with invited expert speakers from Asphalt Institute (AI); European Waterproofing Association (EWA) and European Asphalt Pavement Association (EAPA). The seminar provided a platform for sharing key experiences and informed exchanges.

Collaborations

Working with industry partners and collaborating when needed has always with been a unique value we offer our members.

In 2022, work continued in the Coalition of Asphalt Research on Emissions (CARE) group, which provides unique access to experts across different fields that would not be achievable by one organisation alone.
The two years of work will be concluded in a final report, which will be presented to members early 2023.

Voice of the bitumen industry

Eurobitume’s increasing presence across events, more invitations to present and raised general awareness have contributed to a steady flow of enquiries and new members joining. As a direct result, the voice of the bitumen industry will continue to strengthen!

2023

Looking ahead, we will be very busy working with members to create a new, ‘one organisation’ structure and operating framework for Eurobitume in 2024. The focus will be on functional expertise and Europe-wide implementation of our deliverables.

Finally, I would also like to thank all the members, especially those with a leadership role within Eurobitume, for your high level of energy and overall passion for the industry. Together with the Eurobitume team, you have produced amazing results!
