2nd edition of the French National Road Observatory (ONR) report published

Led by IDRRIM (Institute of Roads, Streets and Infrastructure for Mobility) since January 2016, the French National Road Observatory (ONR) was created to meet the challenges of maintaining and preserving French road assets. The 1st ONR report in November 2017 expressed the shared desire of representatives of public road network authorities - State, Association of French Departments, Association of French Municipalities - and road professionals to create within IDRRIM, a tool - the ONR - to support sustainable road asset management policies.

The 2nd ONR report marks a turning point: for the first time it draws up a general overview of the road networks managed by the departments (pavements and structures), based on a sample representing more than half of these communities and more than 200,000 km.

  • 55% of departmental roads are in good condition, 33% require maintenance and 12% are in poor condition.
  • 63.8% of departmental bridges are in good condition, 27.5% require specialized maintenance, 6.7% repair work, and 2% major repairs.

There is no doubt that this report will help each road manager decide how best to manage their road infrastructure assets.

The 2nd ONR report also continues and amplifies the momentum initiated in 2017, with 65 departments participating in the latest survey, the first metropolitan areas and, above all, a better quality of response. Add to this the data published by the Government and the first steps towards extending this observatory to the group of communities of municipalities exercising road competence, the success of this approach owes much to the commitment of each participating community.
