Another successful webinar took place recently, when more than 60 people ‘attended’ Eurobitume’s latest members-only educational e-learning webinar, ‘Handling bitumen safely’, presented by Eurobitume Team member Dr Ian Lancaster.

Developed by Eurobitume’s Safe Handling of Bitumen Sub-Committee (SHSC) to provide non-technical and new-to-the-industry people with a good understanding of bitumen safe handling practices, content support was expertly provided by Jean-Michel Michou, the Eurobitume Team focal person for the SHSC.

Eurobitume SHSC Chair Bruno PIGUEL (Shell’s HSSE Manager for Bitumen in France, Benelux and Africa) commented: “Bitumen is a very versatile, safe material which has a wide variety of applications. This seminar gave participants an excellent overview of what safe handling of bitumen looks like”.

The webinar started by clarifying how to differentiate between hazard and risk, which are often mistakenly seen as interchangeable, then provided an overview of the hazards associated with bitumen - including temperature, contact with water, the presence of Hydrogen Sulphide, fire and high pressure. Methods of managing those risks safely using safe working procedures, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and minimising the temperature were also discussed.

After a lively Q&A session, which clearly demonstrated how important health and safety is to Eurobitume members, the webinar ended with everyone understanding that when handled correctly bitumen is a safe product to use.

These training webinars reach and are valued by a wide range of people, including Fabrice BLANC, VP Bitumen - Marketing & Services at Eurobitume member company TotalEnergies, who said: “Thanks to all for a very interesting, clear and comprehensive webinar in a synthetic format!”.

Slides, speaker notes and a recording of this fifth members-only educational e-learning webinar will be packaged into a discrete learning package and made available, exclusively to members, alongside those from the preceding four webinars through the Eurobitume members’ Intranet site.

Eurobitume’s final educational webinar this year, ‘Basics in bitumen testing’, takes place on Wednesday 7th December. A full programme of training webinars is timetabled for 2023, with details to be confirmed soon.
