Eurobitume advocates sustainable use of bitumen in construction at Future Roads event in New Zealand

Eurobitume’s position as the first reference for bitumen in Europe was underlined recently when the association was invited to deliver an expert presentation at Future Roads, the annual New Zealand roading industry conference.

Looking black, seeing green!’ was the title of the online presentation delivered by Dr Ian Lancaster, Eurobitume Technical Lead, to more than 300 delegates on the second day of this event, held in Hamilton on New Zealand’s North Island.

The presentation explained how bitumen is contributing to a sustainable construction environment, with asphalt being one of the most recycled materials in the world. Ian also explained how bitumen is already contributing to the construction industry meeting four of the United Nations’ 17 sustainable development goals:

# 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure
#11: Sustainable cities & communities
#12: Responsible consumption & production
#13: Climate action

Ian highlighted the unique recycling properties of bituminous materials and how incorporating modifiers reduces temperature susceptibility, improves flexibility, reduces application temperatures and enables thinner pavement structures. He also discussed the low carbon vs. long life dilemma and stressed the importance of working with key industry stakeholders.

Finally, he emphasised the fact that bitumen will continue to be a key, sustainable component in the construction, maintenance and repair of infrastructure (roads, bridges, buildings, roofing, etc) and make a significant contribution to the circular economy.
