Alternative binder solutions for sustainable and greener pavements was the title of the latest Eurobitume academia webinar, which was held in partnership with the Western Research Institute (WRI), in Wyoming, USA.

Jeramie Adams, the Vice-President of WRI’s RenuMAT group, which focuses upon Renewable Upcycling, carbon Materials and Asphalt Technologies, lead the first Eurobitume academia webinar delivered from outside Europe, which was attended by more than 40 people from member organisations, Eurobitume and invited guests.

After a brief introduction about WRI, its Vison and Mission, Jeramie provided informative summaries about various research studies into different types of alternative binders, available feedstocks, and processes for production. Later in the presentation, attention was given to alternative binder work being performed at WRI regarding reducing CO2 emissions to help the industry meet the 2050 Net Zero target. This included binders produced from naturally occurring carbon-ore using reactive renewable bio-based solvents, as well upcycling of wind turbine blades and waste plastic for new hybrid waste/bio-products.

The webinar also included contributions from WRI CEO Jean-Pascal Planche and Yogesh Kumbargeri, Lead Research Engineer at WRI.

The next Eurobitume-academia webinar this will look at Experimental & theoretical tools to assess bitumen properties, including sustainable development & rehabilitation and will be hosted by the Université Gustave Eiffel in Paris, France, on Thursday, 18th January 2024.
