The Content Gauges and High Level Alarms Toolbox Talk is the latest in a series of safety-related toolbox talks developed by Eurobitume UK to support asphalt manufacturers and others who receive and store hot bitumen enhance the safe delivery of bitumen.

Produced to help reduce the number of bitumen spills caused by the failure of content gauges and high level alarms (HLAs), the Content Gauges and High Level Alarms Toolbox Talk presents information on the importance of:

  • The Safe Working Capacity of the storage tank
  • Stock reconciliation
  • Calibration of the gauges and HLAs, and
  • Set up of HLAs

As part of Eurobitume’s mission to promote the safe use of bitumen, Eurobitume UK has now produced 10 Toolbox Talks which are available to download from the Eurobitume website:

  1. Bitumen Delivery Driver Induction – why driver inductions are important and what they should cover
  2. Bitumen Discharge Permit - to be completed by both the driver and customer representative before carrying out the delivery. When completed correctly, it eliminates the majority of uncontrolled bitumen spills
  3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - details the PPE required by anyone within the 6m exclusion zone during the delivery of bitumen
  4. Emergency Safety Showers - key to the safe delivery of bitumen is the presence of a suitably located safety shower, so if anyone suffers a bitumen burn during the delivery of bitumen they can immediately cool the affected area
  5. Ground Based Pumps (GBPs) - details the safety and environmental benefits of GBPs, design considerations and the operation and maintenance of GBPs – which eliminate the need to pressurise the delivery vehicle
  6. Blocked and Partially Blocked Pipework – identifies how to minimise blocked and partially blocked pipelines through the optimal layout of the pipework, lagging and trace heating
  7. Trace Heating of Bitumen Pipelines - describes how to trace heat the pipeline and provides guidance on the duration for heating the pipeline prior to and post delivery
  8. Emergency Shutdown of Bitumen Delivery Vehicles - shows the location of emergency stops and how to stop the delivery safely if the driver is incapacitated during the delivery
  9. Content Gauges and High Level Alarms
  10. Pocket Guide to the Safe Delivery of Bitumen - an updated mini ‘aide memoire’ to the Guide to the Safe Delivery of Bitumen.
