Successful second academia partner webinar – TU Braunschweig

At the invitation of Eurobitume’s Technical Committee, the Braunschweig Pavement Engineering Centre (ISBS - Institut für Straßenwesen) of the Technische Universität Braunschweig in Germany recently hosted and ran a very interesting webinar on ‘Performance Testing of Bitumen and Mastic in DSR’ attended by a technical audience of 47 people from Eurobitume member organisations.

Dr.-Ing. Johannes Büchner and Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr.techn. Michael P. Wistuba from ISBS jointly delivered the webinar.

They began by providing some interesting background about the university, which was founded in 1745 as Collegium Carolinum; about the Pavement Engineering Centre, ISBS, which was set up in 1976; its research focus on asphalt technology; and how performance testing of bitumen and mastic in the Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) has become one of the main research topics at ISBS, because of the high levels of interest in this area within the asphalt and bitumen community.

They then provided excellent overviews of major research projects ISBS has conducted on behalf of the bitumen and asphalt industry. These included the VEGAS research project, which set out to simplify asphalt performance testing, and the Bit-Q research project, which sought to develop a methodology for the evaluation of bitumen and mastic properties in asphalt road construction.

The final part of the webinar was a lively discussion and Q&A session. After this, Eurobitume Technical Committee Chair Véronique Ducreux closed the webinar and thanked the TU Braunschweig for putting on such an interesting and worthwhile event for Eurobitume members.
