Safely managing the risks of H2S through the bitumen supply chain

Europe |

H2S is a naturally-occurring hazardous gas that can be released from hot bitumen at different stages in the bitumen supply chain: during manufacture, loading, transportation, delivery, storage and application.

To promote the safe use of bitumen, Eurobitume has developed a comprehensive suite of guidance documents to help bitumen producers, plant and site managers, users and hauliers safely manage the risks associated with H2S, and also comply with relevant Health and Safety legislation.

The documents are among more than 150 clearly named HSE-related documents, which can be easily found and freely downloaded from the Eurobitume website.

H2S in Bitumen Emissions card
This card identifies the main hazards associated with H2S in bitumen emissions, the likely exposure scenarios and potential risks associated with it - in the context of bitumen loading, discharge, storage, transport and use – and provides expert guidance.

Safe Handling of Bitumen Card
This card contains brief general advice on best practice on the safe handling of bitumen. Any controls and means of protection must be based on local, site-specific risk assessments.

Guide to the Safe Delivery of Bitumen
This guide highlights the responsibilities of those involved throughout the supply chain, summarises best practices and aims to define the minimum industry standards for design, equipment and procedures - based on legislation and experience – for member companies, bitumen hauliers and customer sites.

H2S pocket guide
This handy, pocket-sized guide has been specifically designed for easy reference by tanker drivers and contains expert advice about how they can reduce the risks associated with H2S during loading and unloading. It is only available in English and French. Minimising exposure to H2S emissions To minimise exposure to potentially harmful H2S emissions, people working with hot bitumen should take appropriate precautions, including using personal protective equipment, and follow specified operating procedures and safety guidelines.
